When Betsy meets Lotus

From Lotus, my WIP for April 2019’s CampNaNoWriMo. I finished it at 38K. I love the story, especially how it ends, setting up NTSR 1 nicely. If I haven’t already mentioned it, I plan to publish Lotus after books 1 and 2 of NTSR have been released.

Betsy has been taking care of Lotus since she was found unconscious in the woods.

“One question at a time is enough, thank you,” said Lotus. “I am tired and I have just woken and, oh … you had a dream. I see it spooling away from you, like smoky ribbons pulling the dregs of it into the corners of the room, into the shadows.”

Betsy’s heart thudded in her chest, the pulse of it driving an uneasy rhythm in her ears, every beat of it dead, dead, dead. “Vampires don’t dream,” she said, glaring at the girl, waiting for a reaction, for some awful terror to grip the girl’s features. But as that likelihood faded, Betsy’s guilt rose to her lips. “Sorry, that was uncalled for.”

The girl smiled. “You thought I couldn’t smell you, Betsy Merryweather?”

She leant back in her chair, folding her arms. “What do I smell like?”

“The first frost, tinted pink by winter sun.”

“Oh.”

“And honey.”

“I keep bees.”

“And rot.”

“Oh.”
